Website Maintenance: What Needs Checking After Launch?

Website Maintenance

Website Maintenance – Launching a business website is a satisfying moment. The pages are finished, the links work and you can finally send customers to it.

But a website needs attention after launch. Contact details change, services develop and the systems behind the pages need looking after.

A practical website maintenance checklist helps you keep track of those jobs without turning every review into a major project.

Check that enquiries still reach you

Start with one of the website’s most important functions: letting customers contact your business.

Send a test message through each enquiry form. Confirm that it arrives in the correct inbox and that you can reply to the person who submitted it.

Check telephone, email and messaging links too. If you’ve changed a number or email address, look beyond the contact page. Old details can remain in footers, buttons, blog posts and floating contact widgets.

Repeat these checks after changes to forms, email settings or relevant plugins.

Keep your information accurate

Review your main pages for details that no longer reflect your business.

Look at your services, prices, opening hours, team information and examples of work. Remove expired offers and update any wording that describes something as new or coming soon when that is no longer true.

Older articles deserve attention as well. You don’t need to rewrite every post regularly, but information about your own services and processes should remain useful and accurate.

Review the site on a real phone

A desktop preview won’t show every problem a mobile visitor might encounter.

Open the website on your phone and move through the main customer journey. Read a service page, open the menu and try the contact options.

Check that images fit, text is readable and floating buttons don’t cover important content. Try the videos or other embedded features you expect customers to use.

If you notice a problem, record the page address and take a screenshot. That gives whoever maintains the website a clear starting point.

Keep software updates organised

If your website uses WordPress, its core software, theme and plugins need appropriate updates.

Make sure someone is responsible for checking them. Before significant changes, have a usable backup and a way to restore the site if something goes wrong.

After updating, check the functions that matter to your business. Forms, payments, navigation and member access deserve particular attention.

If your main website uses static pages alongside a WordPress blog, remember that the two parts have different maintenance needs. The static pages may not use plugins, but their content, links and forms still need checking.

Know what your backups contain

A backup is useful when you know what it covers and how it would be restored.

For a WordPress site, that generally means both the website files and the database. If another part of your website sits outside WordPress, confirm that it is included in your backup arrangements too.

Keep track of where backups are stored and who can access them. Take a fresh backup before substantial changes rather than assuming an older copy contains your latest work.

Review links, media and payments

Follow important links and check for missing images or videos that no longer load.

Where you offer online payments, confirm that the displayed price and payment option are correct. A page showing the right amount doesn’t by itself prove the complete checkout process works, so agree an appropriate testing method with your provider.

Check these features after moving hosting, changing a domain or replacing major parts of the site.

Give the work a clear owner

Website maintenance is easier when responsibility is agreed.

Know who handles content changes, software updates, backups and technical problems. If support is included in a website package, check exactly what is covered and how to request help.
